Human beings are inherently social and collectivist. For hundreds of thousands of years we lived in tribes, we shared resources, we believed that safety, prosperity and happiness were best achieved together. And yet as society has supposedly developed we seem to become increasingly isolated. Our homes have become our castles and those castles have walls and moats. Technology should be connecting us and yet more people than ever are suffering with mental health issues and feeling increasingly lonely. Not least the young.

For some time now a hypothesis has been developing in my head that we've got this whole thing the wrong way around. That the collective, the team, our society should come first, and the individual should come second. Not so that we can have less, the communist experiment over many years shows us that puritanical collectivism only drives living standards down. I'm interested in pursuing a different type of collective. One where we share resources, where we share wisdom and energy. One where we acknowledge that it takes a tribe to raise a child, and that we are all our best selves when we are with our friends. A life where we share more but also have more.

I want to go to some of the places where smart people have trialed these ideas. Working spaces that people live in, holiday destinations where you commune, living arrangements that are shared. What's more I want to do this with my most important team, my young family. We’d love you to follow our journey of discovery and adventure.
